VEPs (Virtual Environmental Planning)

Flood Models

3D model of the Bristol harboursideThe VEPs project has investigated how existing flood models and maps can be visualised in 3D using the VEPs technology. The aim of this approach is to help people understand the environmental implications of planning decisions in flood risk areas. It is possible to view flood information in 3D and move around the model to view the effect of the flood from different viewpoints.

The types of flood information that can be visualised include:

  • historic flood extent outlines for coastal and/or river flooding
  • flood risk maps (from 2D information)
  • models of flood events showing changes over time.

A demonstration has been developed using the Bristol harbourside area as an illustration of what the technology can deliver.
